Theodor Wehrmann

Theodor Wehrmann (born July 27, 1819 in Vaethen , † November 28, 1892 in Stettin ; full name Rudolf Theodor Wehrmann ) was a German high school teacher . From 1856 until his death he was a provincial school councilor in Pomerania .

Life

Wehrmann came from a pastor family. He first received home tuition from his father and then attended the city school in Tangermünde , then the cathedral high school in Magdeburg , where he graduated from high school in 1837 . He studied first at the University of Halle-Wittenberg , then at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . In Berlin he wrote with Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg his doctoral thesis Introductio in Platonis de summo bono doctrinam with which he in 1843 to Dr. phil. received his doctorate. In the same year he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post.

As a high school teacher, he first worked at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin, where he passed his probationary year, then in Halberstadt and Magdeburg . In 1853 he became rector of the Stiftsgymnasium in Zeitz .

In 1856, Wehrmann was appointed to Stettin by the Prussian minister of education, Karl Otto von Raumer, as the provincial school councilor for higher education in the Pomeranian province . Wehrmann worked in this office until his death in 1892. During his tenure, the number of higher education institutions in Pomerania doubled from 15 to 30; Wehrmann always took a personal interest in these new high schools and secondary schools.

Wehrmann published essays, including in the encyclopedia of the entire education and teaching system . A selection of his lectures was published under the title Hellenism and Christianity (1888). Wehrmann was an active member of the Evangelical Church. He was involved in the Inner Mission and was a member of the Provincial and General Synods.

His son was the historian Martin Wehrmann (1861–1937).
