Theophil Georgi

Theophil Georgi (born April 19, 1674 in Eibenstock , † June 8, 1762 in Leipzig ) was a German bookseller, publisher and bibliographer.

Georgi, who comes from the Ore Mountains , completed his apprenticeship at Cotta'sche Verlagbuchhandlung and acquired citizenship in the trade fair city of Leipzig in 1705 , where he soon founded his own publishing house , in which, among other things, he published the first comprehensive bookselling bibliography . The work: General European book lexicon, in which ... to find the vast majority of autores or genres of books which ... before the beginning of the 16th Seculi up to 1739 incl. ... in the European part of the world, but especially in Germany, they were written and printed ... appeared in five volumes and was expanded to include three supplement volumes until 1758. A total of around 120,000 titles are listed in German, Latin or French. The work was published as a photomechanical reprint in 1966/67 by the Academic Printing and Publishing Institute in Graz .
