Theophil Preiswerk (born December 7, 1846 in Basel ; † March 13, 1919 there ) was a Swiss landscape and genre painter .

Life

Theophil Preiswerk was the son of Carl Rudolf Preiswerk, theologian and grammar school teacher, and Sophia geb. Fürstenberger.

He began his drawing and painting lessons in the drawing school of the non-profit society in Basel with Ludwig Adam Kelterborn (1811-1878), then he spent a few months in 1867 in Charles Gleyre's studio in Paris, then studied from November 9, 1867 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich and in Karl Otto's private school in Munich.

He was influenced by the works of Wilhelm Leibl and Hans Thoma exhibited in the Munich Glass Palace . Preiswerk stayed with Arnold Böcklin in Florence from 1874 to 1876 . Then until 1900 he visited Italy several times, living in Rome from 1877 to 1879.

In the 1880s, he finally settled in Switzerland. From 1883 he occupied a studio in the Kunsthalle Basel for about 15 years .
