Marie Thérèse Forget Casgrain , CC , OBE (born July 10, 1896 in Montreal , † November 3, 1981 ibid) was a Canadian politician and suffragette . She was a member of the Canadian Senate for nine months until she retired on reaching the age limit of 75.

Career

Thérèse Casgrain was born on July 10, 1896 to Sir Rodolphe Forget and Blanche MacDonald. She married the Canadian politician Pierre-François Casgrain , with whom she had four children.

She led the Canadian women's suffrage movement in Québec . Between 1928 and 1942 she was the League for Women's Rights. In the 1930s she hosted a well-known radio show called Fémina .

After the Second World War , she was party leader of the Parti social démocratique du Québec , the Québec wing of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation . This made her the first female party leader in Canada. In the 1960s she took over the chairmanship of the New Democratic Party .

In 1967 she was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada . On October 7, 1970, on the recommendation of Pierre Trudeau , she was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Ronald Michener as a non-party in recognition of her achievements . After nine months and four days in the Senate, she left the Senate on July 10, 1971 at the age of 75 due to the age limit for Senate members.

Casgrain died on November 3, 1981 in Montreal at the age of 85. She was buried in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery. The Canadian Post issued a 32-cent stamp in her honor on April 17, 1985.
