Thesaurus Linguae Etruscae
The Thesaurus Linguae Etruscae (ThLE) is a scientific reference work for the study of the Etruscan language and offers a complete philological index of all entries that can be taken from Etruscan texts, as well as all Etruscan words that appear in Greek and Latin sources and glossaries .

Shortly after the end of the Second World War , on the initiative and under the direction of Giacomo Devoto and Massimo Pallottino, preparatory work for a thesaurus for the Etruscan language began at the Istituto di Studi Etruschi ed Italici in Florence and at the Istituto di Etruscologia e Antichità Italiche of the University of Rome . The implementation of the work concentrated on the Institute in Rome, where the Corpus Inscriptionum Etruscarum (CIE), an important collection of Etruscan inscriptions, and other relevant publications, including catalogs of museums and exhibitions, were evaluated. Systematic collections of archaeological finds such as ceramics , glyptics , mirrors and funeral urns were also examined .
It took about 20 years to collect and organize the material. After an initial decision on the direction of further work had been made in 1966 , final decisions were made on the creation and elaboration of the Thesaurus Linguae Etruscae at a colloquium held in Florence in 1969 , attended by experts from several countries. The work was to appear in two separate volumes, the first of which was to be designed as a word form index (indice lessicale), while for the second the form of a real dictionary (vocabolario) was provided.
The publisher's manuscript for the first volume, which Maristella Pandolfini Angeletti had produced under the direction of Massimo Pallottino, was available at the end of 1977. The complex printing set required another year before the work could finally be published in 1978. The edition, including funding and preparation for printing, was carried out by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), an Italian authority promoting scientific research and development. Key employees were Carlo de Simone , Mauro Cristofani and Alessandro Morandi . In addition, numerous other employees were involved, since the thesaurus was a collective work.
In 1984, 1991 and 1998 three supplements for new edition materials followed, but these made quick consultation difficult. After 30 years, the volume was finally out of date, as numerous new epigraphic discoveries were made during this period , including the Tabula Cortonensis . Therefore it became necessary to completely revise the first volume. In 2009 a new edition of the first volume by Enrico Benelli , Maristella Pandolfini Angeletti and Valentina Belfiore was published , the structure and presentation of which is largely based on the first edition. Here, too, the compendium is subdivided into three lists of unequal length: The first and most extensive list includes lemmas in the Etruscan language, which were transcribed from the Etruscan script . The following is a listing of epigraphic evidence in Latin and Greek script and language that refer to Etruscan words.
While the first volume lists the testimonies of all known Etruscan words in their textual, geographical and chronological context, the second volume should now propose for each of these words the various hermeneutical hypotheses that have been developed in scientific work on the Etruscan language. This project has been further developed in an international collaboration since 2011, whereby the precise financial requirements are first determined and fundamental scientific decisions are made with regard to form and content.
