Theudebert (Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Duke Theudebert von Baiern (also Theodebert / Theotpert or Theodo III ; * around 685 , † after 716 ) from the Agilolfinger dynasty was together with his father Theodo II and his brothers Grimoald II from 711 to 716 , Tassilo II. And Theudebald co-regent in Baiern and as such Duke of the part of the tribal duchy of Baiern - Salzburg .

Theudebert was the son of Duke Theodos II and his wife Folchaid . He was married to Regintrud . Although Theodo transferred government power to his son due to illness in 711, after his recovery he resumed government power. An Avar attack on Lorch may have induced him to resume government . Thereupon the Duke divided Baiern between himself and his sons Theudebert (seat Salzburg), Grimoald (seat Freising) and Theudebald (seat Regensburg) and Tassilo II. (Seat Passau (?)). Theudebert's Bavarian seat of government was in Salzburg after the division of the country in 712. Soon after his father's death around 717/18, Grimoald seized his seat of government Freising from the capital Regensburg and drove out the regent Theudebald there. Ultimately, Grimoald and Hugbert fought over the rule of Baiern. After Theudebald's death, Grimoald married Theudebald's widow.

Theudebert helped the Longobard king, Ansprand, in the year 711/12 to recapture his territory. The Bavarian tribal duchy developed a supremacy in the southeast of the empire, but was weakened by the internal fighting of the Agilolfinger.
