Thiobacterium bovistum is a type of gram-negative sulfur bacteria and the only representative of the genus Thiobacterium fromthe Thiotrichaceae family . It is aerobic , relies on oxygen for growth and occurs inwaters containing hydrogen sulfide .

description

Thiobacterium bovistum is a rod-shaped, immobile bacterium, 0.4 to 1.5 micrometers wide and 2.5 to 9 micrometers long. The individual cells have one to nine spherical sulfur inclusions, which means that the cells appear white in incident light and black in transmitted light. Sulfur inclusions are a common characteristic of the Thiotrichaceae family. Thiobacterium bovistum is chemolithotrophic , it gains energy from the oxidation of sulfur compounds.

The cells are embedded in a gelatinous mass and form colonies . Firmly anchored on a substrate, they are tree-shaped, heavily branched and 2 to 3 millimeters long. Freely moving colonies, on the other hand, are spherical with bubble-shaped, water-filled chambers and reach a diameter of up to 4 millimeters. They are found near the surface and resemble mushrooms with spherical fruiting bodies called puffballs , and then the kind of epithet points.

distribution

Thiobacterium bovistum can be found in salt, brackish and fresh water containing hydrogen sulfide , including thermal springs with temperatures of up to 45 ° C. A pure culture in the laboratory has not yet been achieved.

Systematics

The species was first described by Molisch as Bacterium bovista in 1912 , but was separated out as a separate genus by Janke in 1924. A typo was later corrected ( Thiobacterium bovista became Thiobacterium bovistum ).
