Thom Kubli (* 26. March 1969 in Frankfurt am Main as Thomas Werner Fred Kubli ) is a German-Swiss artist , composer and author .

biography

Thom Kubli produced electronic music for labels such as Harthouse and Source Records in the early 1990s . He became known internationally under the pseudonym Planet Jazz and True Frequencies , the latter in collaboration with Boris Hiesserer . In the mid-1990s, experimental performances and productions followed that dealt with the connection between sound and visual media.

From 1999 to 2004 Kubli studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne . In 2002 he developed the work Deterritoriale Schlingen in collaboration with Sven Mann. It was shown at the Transmediale Festival in Berlin in 2003 and received an Honorable Mention . In 2004, he and Sven Mann showed the work Determinale Verschweifungen as a solo exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City.

This was followed by exhibitions of his work at the Akademie der Künste , Berlin 2003, at Eyebeam in New York 2005, at the Transmediale Berlin 2005 and in the Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City 2009. In 2010, Kubli received a production grant from the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC ), Troy for the work Float! Thinktank 21 , which was exhibited at Marian Spore in New York that same year.

In 2012 he produced the work Black Hole Horizon in collaboration with EMPAC and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as part of a further production grant . Further development work on the installation took over four years. Black Hole Horizon was shown in 2015 by the Kunstverein Ingolstadt, in 2016 by Ars Electronica , Linz and in 2017 by the Electronic Language International Festival (FILE Festival), São Paulo and The Lowry, Manchester.

Since 2003 Thom Kubli has been working as a composer, author and director for various German-language broadcasters such as Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln , Deutschlandfunk Kultur or Südwestrundfunk . He has directed over 20 feature and radio play productions and is responsible for over 30 radio play compositions.

Scholarships and Awards

In 2003 and 2005 Thom Kubli received the Honorable Mention from Transmediale Berlin. In 2003 he received a scholarship from the Junge Akademie der Akademie der Künste, Berlin, and won first prize in the Interaction category of the Viper Festival, Basel. In 2005 he received a research grant from EMPAC, Troy and in 2006 a grant from TESLA, Berlin. In 2010 he received the Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts as part of a production grant from EMPAC, Troy in 2012 received another production grant from EMPAC.
