Thomas Gair Ashton, 1st Baron Ashton of Hyde (born February 5, 1855 in Fallowfield , Manchester , Lancashire , England, † May 1, 1933 in Robertsbridge, Sussex , England) was a British politician, entrepreneur and peer .

life and career

Ashton came from a family that had been cotton manufacturers for many years . He attended Rugby School and then studied at the University College of the University of Oxford , before he went into the family business. From 1885 to 1886 he was an MP for the constituency of Hyde in the House of Commons . In 1886 he stood again unsuccessfully for this seat. From 1895 to 1911 he represented the Luton constituency in parliament . He was also Justice of the Peace of Cheshire and Sussex . On June 28, 1911 he was raised to Baron Ashton of Hyde and thereby received an hereditary seat in the House of Lords .

Ashton was married to Eva Margaret James since 1886. The couple had a total of four children. He died in May 1933 at the age of 78.
