Thomas Bamlett (* 4th quarter 1880 in Kimblesworth , † October 9, 1913 in Horde ), nickname Tom or Tommy , was an English football player .

Career

Bamlett played cricket and football for the local club in his hometown of Kimblesworth, a village near Chester-le-Street , County Durham , in the early 20th century . In February 1901 he made his debut for the Newcastle United reserve team in the Northern Alliance and impressed the Athletic News correspondent , who commented on Bamlett's appearance: “A special feature of the game was the performance of Bamlett, of Kibblesworth [sic], who first appeared in the United-Elf. While not tall, Bamlett is superbly built and has all the looks to develop into a top notch defender. He certainly didn't have to face high-class players, but his form was sufficient evidence for the trained eye that he is a well above average player. He hit the ball over good lengths in view of the greasy turf, straddled fearlessly and his coolness and means of placing a ball under distress were of the most commendable quality. "

After good performances in the reserve team, he was in early October 1901 as a reserve player for the away game in the First Division against Notts County to the squad of the first team and moved after the failure of right-back Dave Gardner in the team. He made his debut alongside left defender Tommy Davidson on October 3, beating Notts County 2-0, and for the game against Small Heath in Birmingham two days later they traveled directly from Nottingham via Tamworth . The 3-1 defeat was also Bamlett's last appearance in the Football League . In the following game Gardner was in the squad again, in the further course of the season Davidson and Bob Bennie were mostly the defenders. In the following years Bamlett did not get beyond missions in the reserve team, which was one of the strongest teams in the north-east of England and which in addition to winning the Northumberland Senior Cup in 1901 and 1904, the championships of the Northern Alliance (1901 and 1902) and the Northern League (1903 and 1904) won.

In the summer of 1904 he moved to the Southern League for the London club West Ham United . On the occasion of his move he was from Kimblesworth Cricket Club, where he in 1904 the best batting average had achieved adopted during an evening event and this was "a travel bag, Reisenecessaire , tightening ring and Smoker." On the occasion of the historic first game in Upton Park , a 3-0 success against Millwall at the start of the season on September 1, 1904, he formed the defensive with goalkeeper Matt Kingsley and defender Gardner, both of whom he already knew from their time together at Newcastle United. In February 1905 he was ousted by Sydney Hammond from the team and Bamlett returned to the north-east of England at the end of the season after 18 league and one cup use (1: 2 against Brighton & Hove Albion ). With FC West Stanley he played in the North Eastern League until 1909 ; then possibly for Horde Athletic in the Wearside League .

After his professional career, Bamlett worked as a blacksmith and died after a long, serious illness in October 1913 in hordes . At the following home game, the flag at West Stanley's Murray Park Stadium was raised to half-mast.
