Thomas Beach

Thomas Beach (* 1738 in Milton Abbas near Dorchester , Dorsetshire , † December 17, 1806 in Dorchester) was an English portrait painter .

Life

Beach went to London at the age of 22 to study with Sir Joshua Reynolds from 1760 to 1762 . Around 1771 he had settled in Bath as a portrait painter, but soon had exhibitions in London. In 1775 he was a fellow in the Society of Artists and had made a name for himself as a portraitist of the "better society". From 1785 to 1797 he exhibited his pictures at the Royal Academy of Arts .

He painted, among others, the actress Sarah Siddons and her brother John Philip Kemble in his most important production as " Macbeth ". His painting of horse dealer Richard Tattersall was shown at the South Kensington Exhibition in 1867 and his portrait of William Woodfall , the first Parliament reporter, is now in the National Portrait Gallery (London) .
