Thomas Brunner (playwright)
Thomas Brunner (* around 1535 in Landshut ; † October 28, 1571 in Steyr ) was a German author of biblical dramas.
Life
Brunner studied in Wittenberg , where he turned to school drama - possibly under Philipp Melanchthon's influence. From 1558 he went to Steyr as a Latin teacher. He wanted to resign several times - probably because of the poor pay, possibly under the influence of the Anabaptists or because of his poor health. Private aspects are also possible, but in Steyr you could always put him off so that he stayed until the end of his life.
His dramas also follow the Wittenberg pattern, which is built up from biblical themes and texts from the Old Testament. However, only one biblical drama for a school performance has survived, depicting the exodus of Joseph and his brothers in 1566 until they were reunited. Two other, less dramatic pieces were performed by students at weddings: in 1569 he dealt with the subject of Tobias, in the same year with Isaac and Rebecca.
Brunner's dramas show their own line by depicting distant places on two different stages, thus giving the audience the opportunity to understand a differentiated observation of the drama.
