Bucher-Johannessen, who starts for the Fossum IF, took part in junior competitions until 2017. He finished sixth over 10 km classic at the 2016 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Râșnov and ninth over 10 km freestyle at the 2017 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Soldier Hollow . He completed his first races in the Scandinavian Cup in December 2017 in Vuokatti , which he finished in 106th place in the sprint, 24th place over 15 km classic and 20th place over 15 km freestyle. In the 2018/19 season he reached 14th place in the overall ranking of the Scandinavian Cup. He achieved fourth place in the 30 km mass start race in Vuokatti. At the U23 World Championships in Lahti in 2019 , he finished 13th in the 15 km freestyle and sixth in the 30 km mass start race. He made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup in March 2019 in Oslo . He got his first World Cup points with 13th place in the 50 km mass start race. At the U23 World Championships 2020 in Oberwiesenthal , he finished fourth in the 30 km mass start race.
