Thomas Campbell Eyton (born September 10, 1809 in Eyton Hall ( Eyton upon the Weald Moors ), † October 25, 1880 ibid) was a British naturalist .

Live and act

Thomas Campbell Eyton was born on his parents' country estate Eyton Hall, near Wellington ( Shropshire ), and was a son of Thomas Eyton . He studied with his friend, Charles Robert Darwin , at Cambridge University . After Eyton inherited the country estate in 1855, he built a large natural history museum there . He was a Fellow of the Linnean Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London .

Eyton's works also showed the transition from the art of copperplate engraving to lithography at the beginning of the 19th century. His A history of the rarer British birds (1836), illustrated with woodcuts , appeared as an appendix to Thomas Bewick's History of British birds . In 1838, Eyton published a work on duck birds , A monograph on the Anatidæ or Duck tribe , which contains six hand-colored lithographs by Edward Lear and countless monochrome plates. Copies of both works, Eyton's anatomical study Osteologia avium (1867) and its first supplementary volume (1869) are in the Hill Ornithology Collection at the Cornell University Library.
