Thomas Christaller (born May 6, 1949 in Bonn ) is a German computer scientist .

Christaller studied mathematics , computer science and physics at the University of Marburg and the University of Bonn . In 1986 he did his doctorate on generic control structures using the example of cascaded ATNs with Wilfried Brauer at the University of Hamburg . Until his retirement he was Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Bielefeld University .

From 1985 to 1992 Christaller was co-editor of the journal KI and from 1998 to 2004 a member of the Science Council . He also headed the Institute for Autonomous Intelligent Systems at GMD and was head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems until 2010 .

Christaller supported research into artificial intelligence in Germany and dealt with computational linguistics and robotics . In artificial intelligence, he was primarily looking for interdisciplinary dialogue and was committed to the interdisciplinary college . Christaller was co-initiator of the RoboCup German Open competition and promoted research in the field of humanoid robots.

Since 1973 Christaller has dedicated himself to the Japanese martial art Aikidō and teaches it regularly in the context of university sports programs . He received his graduation from Katsuaki Asai .
