Thomas Dwight Goodell

Thomas Dwight Goodell (born November 8, 1854 in Ellington , Connecticut , † July 7, 1920 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American classical philologist who worked from 1889 until his death at Yale University .

Life

Thomas Dwight Goodell studied Classical Philology at Yale University , received his bachelor's degree there in 1877 and then taught Latin and Greek at a high school in Hartford (Connecticut) . In addition, he carried out his doctorate to Ph. D. at Yale University, which he achieved in 1884 with a study on the use of the genitive in Sophocles . In 1888 Goodell left the school service and took a position as an assistant professor at his alma mater , Yale University, on January 1, 1889 . In 1893 he was appointed Full Professor, in 1909 Senior Professor of Greek and in 1912 Lampson Professor of the Greek Language and Literature (succeeding Bernadotte Perrin ).

Goodell was also involved in academic associations, particularly as a long-time board member of the American Philological Association , of which he was president in 1912. He had a special relationship with Greece. In 1894/95 he was visiting professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and from 1908 until his death he was a member of its governing body.

His main research interests were Greek metrics and the influence of Greek on the English language , as well as the Greek theater and Greek tombs. In addition to several essays, he published various textbooks for studying Greek.
