Thomas Eich

Thomas Eich (* 1973 ) is a German scholar of Islam .

Life

From 1993 to 1999 he studied Islamic studies, medieval history and Iranian studies in Freiburg im Breisgau and Bamberg , graduating in October 1999 (grade 1.1). Title of the master's thesis : The Rihlades Fath Allah as-Sayigh al-Halabi as a starting point for a description of the rural society of Syria in the 18th and 19th centuries . From 1999 to 2002 he received a PhD scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation at the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 2003 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Seminar for Oriental Studies in Bochum in the project “Bioethical Issues in the Context of Islamic Law and its Reception by Members of the Medical State”. Since 2005, funding has been expanded under the project title: "Discussions about the beginning and end of life in modern Islamic law and their effects in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and India". From 2005 to 2006 he was a research assistant at the Seminar for Oriental Studies in Bochum. From 2006 to 2007 he was again a research associate in the bioethics project. In 2007 he became a temporary academic advisor at the Oriental Seminary at the University of Tübingen (on leave from 2008 to 2009 for visiting researcher at Georgetown University ). On June 9, 2010 he was awarded the Venia legendi for the subject of Islamic Studies (cumulative habilitation procedure ). Since 2010 he has been teaching as Professor of Islamic Studies (W2) at the Asia-Africa Institute at the University of Hamburg .
