In the course of the controversial funeral speech that the then Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Günther Oettinger held in 2007 on the occasion of the death of Hans Filbinger, Thomas Knapp gained nationwide attention. Knapp had the then chairman of the CDU state parliamentary group, Stefan Mappus MdL, on May 2 at a district delegate conference of the SPD district association Enzkreis in Keltern-Ellmendingen, in connection with the CDU's role in the affair of Oettinger's funeral speech for Hans Filbinger and the events criticized around the study center Weikersheim. Among other things, he spoke of “brown sauce” in the minds of some CDU politicians. He had also said that Mappus was fishing on the right edge and "if the earth were flat, Mappus would fall over the edge, it is already that far to the right". Stefan Mappus then tried to have these statements prohibited under civil law, but failed with his application for an injunction on May 31, 2007 before the Karlsruhe Regional Court.
