Thomas Lang (choir director)

Thomas Lang (born 1958 in Göppingen ) is a German choir director . He has worked at the Vienna State Opera since 2006 .

life and work

Thomas Lang was born in Göppingen and studied school music and musicology at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and at the University of Tübingen . This was followed by training as a conductor with Thomas Ungar . During his student days he took over the management of several choirs in the Stuttgart area. In 1988 he received his first permanent engagement at the stages of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck - first as a solo coach , then as choir director and conductor. There he also supervised the children's concerts of the Lübeck Philharmonic and taught at the local music college. In 1999 he moved to the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden as choir director . With the choir of this house he participated in the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival in a staged performance of the St. John Passion . Since the 2006/07 season he has been the choir director and artistic director of the choir academy at the Vienna State Opera . He teaches choral conducting as part of a visiting professorship at the Vienna University of Music.

From 2006 to 2011 he was choir director at the Salzburg Festival , most recently for the Frau ohne Schatten in the Großes Festspielhaus , conducted by Christian Thielemann , and for Macbeth in the Felsenreitschule , conducted by Riccardo Muti .

On November 19, 2017, he conducted the gala concert for the 90th anniversary of the Vienna State Opera Choir Concert Association with the soloists Piotr Beczała and Anna Netrebko .
