Thomas John Lieb (born October 28, 1899 in Faribault , Minnesota , † April 30, 1962 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American athlete who was successful as a discus thrower in the early 1920s . He was 1.90 m tall, weighed 98 kg and started for the University of Notre Dame and the Illinois Athletic Club in Chicago .

Lieb won four championship titles:

  • 1922: University champion with 43.95 m and third in the US championship with 41.93 m
  • 1923: University champion with 43.69 m and US champion with 46.12 m; this achievement meant second place on the annual world best list.
  • 1924: US champion with 44.07 m

In 1924 Lieb also won the Olympic elimination with 46.78 m. If he had repeated this performance in Paris , he would have become Olympic champion. There he only reached 44.83 m and had to be content with bronze behind his compatriot Bud Houser (gold with 46.15 m) and the Finn Vilho Niittymaa (silver with 44.95 m). He only made a big hit after the games, when he threw the discus on September 14th in Chicago to the new American record distance of 47.61 m and missed the eight-year-old world record of the Finn Armas Taipale by only 49 cm.

After finishing his active career, Tom Lieb worked as a football coach.
