Thomas Mitis
Thomas Mitis von Limusa since 1556 (* 1523 in Nymburk , † 1591 in Prague ) was a Bohemian humanistic neo-Latin poet , scholar, school principal and publisher in Český Brod (Bohemian Brod) and Prague.
He was also cited as Thomas Mitis Lymusaeus, Thomas Mitis of Limusa or Lemusa, Tomáš Mitis z Limuz.
Life
Mitis went to school in Nymburk and Žatec (Saaz) and studied at the Charles University in Prague , where he was a student of the humanist Matthaeus Collinus , became a baccalaureate in 1546, master’s degree in 1552 with subsequent teaching activities in Böhmisch-Brod and later at the Jendrisska school in the old town of Prague; he also had a private school in his house. From 1563 Mitis von Limusa was a bookseller and publisher with his own print shop. He was in lively contact with leading writers of his time. He wrote Latin poems mostly with a religious content. He also published the work of other humanists in Bohemia .
In 1571 he came into conflict with the authorities because of the sale and importation of books of Calvinist and Reformed teaching to Zwingli, which were then forbidden .
Mitis von Limusa himself wrote poems in Latin , mostly of religious content. From 1563 he published the writings of the humanist Bohuslaus Lobkowicz von Hassenstein .
