Thomas Onslow, 2nd Earl of Onslow , (born March 15, 1754 in Soho , London , † February 22, 1827 in Clandon Park , West Clandon ) was an English nobleman and politician .

Life

Family and title

Onslow was born as the eldest son of George Onslow, 1st Earl of Onslow and his wife Henrietta Shelley. He had three brothers and a sister. Three of his siblings died in infancy. He was married twice. On December 20, 1776, he married Arabella Ellerker, daughter of the lawyer Eaton Mainwaring Ellerker, at Lambeth Palace . After their death on April 11, 1782 Onslow married on February 13, 1783 the widowed Charlotte Duncombe, daughter of William Hale. He had a total of six children, four boys and two girls, four of whom died early. The hereditary title of Earl of Onslow and the subordinate titles Onslow took over after the death of his father in 1814. With the death of Onslow, these titles passed to his son's eldest son from his first marriage, Arthur George .

Career

Onslow received his education from 1764 to 1771 at the Westminster School . On November 9, 1771, he was then to study at Peterhouse College of Cambridge University accepted. There he received the Master of Arts in 1773 . In 1775 he was elected to parliament for Rye . He represented this until 1784. Between 1790 and 1806 he then held the seat for the constituency of Guilford . In addition to his political activities, like his father, he held the post of Out Ranger in Windsor Great Park in 1793 . He was also militarily active. For example, in 1794 he served in the Yeomanry of Surrey with the rank of lieutenant colonel and was a member of the Surrey militia between 1797 and 1812 .
