Thomas Pfeiffer (born March 4, 1961 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German lawyer.

Life

Pfeiffer studied after dropping the baccalaureate 1978 to the first state examination in 1984 from the University of Frankfurt am Main Law . He was here a fellow of the Scholarship Foundation of the German People . After the state examination, he was assistant to Manfred Wolf at the University of Frankfurt and received his doctorate in 1986 on the subject of the importance of private law pollution control - an investigation into §§ 1004, 906 BGB . After completing his legal clerkship, he passed the second state examination in 1989. From 1989 to 1990 he was a visiting scholar at Yale Law School and at the same time a habilitation fellow from the DFG . After appointments to the universities of Dresden (1993) and Bielefeld (1994), Pfeiffer was professor at Bielefeld University from 1994 to 2002 and at the same time a judge in the main office at the Hamm Higher Regional Court from 1996 to 2002 . Pfeiffer has been director of the Institute for Foreign and International Private and Commercial Law at the University of Heidelberg since 2002 and holds the chair for civil law , international private law , comparative law and international procedural law .

From 2004 to 2006 Pfeiffer was Dean of the Law Faculty of Heidelberg University. He was visiting professor in 2005, 2010 and 2019 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC (USA), 2006 at Hong Kong City University, 2014 at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution (Malibu, California, USA), 2015 at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and in 2016 at the University of Verona (Italy). From October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2013, he also took on the post of Vice-Rector of Heidelberg University, initially for teaching and communication and from October 2009 for international relations. In 2009 he did not accept a call to the University of Marburg. He has been a member of the Heidelberg University Council since 2014.

Pfeiffer is also deputy chairman of the board of the Federal Working Group of Christian Democratic Jurists ( BACDJ ).

Thomas Pfeiffer has been involved in legislative procedures in the Bundestag several times as an expert, for example on the anti-discrimination law . He was one of the editors of the Journal for the Total Law of Obligations (ZGS), the Jurisprudence - Journal for jurisprudential research and the Yearbooks for Italian Law; He also publishes the Lindenmaier-Möhring collection of decisions of the Federal Court of Justice (LMK) with comments and the legal science journal (RW) and is a member of the editorial board of the journal for international business law. He is also deputy chairman of the Association of Civil Law Teachers and the German-American Lawyers Association. He is also a well-known arbitrator for German and international business disputes. He is often appointed by German courts as an independent expert for questions of foreign law. In 2010 he was awarded the Rio Branco Order by the Republic of Brazil and an honorary doctorate from the International Hellenic University (Thessaloniki, Greece) in 2015 for his services to international academic exchange and comparative law .
