Thomas Raymond Kelly
Thomas Raymond "Red" Kelly (born August 29, 1927 in Shelby , Montana , † June 9, 2004 in Tacoma , Washington ) was an American jazz bassist.
Kelly grew up in Seattle . In 1944 he began his career with Johnny Wittwer and Tiny Hill. He then played with Sam Donahue (1948) and Chubby Jackson. In 1949 toured with Charlie Barnet and Herbie Fields before joining the trio of Red Norvo in 1951 . He then worked with Claude Thornhill (1952), Woody Herman (1953), Jimmy Dorsey , Maynard Ferguson and Lennie Niehaus before playing with Stan Kenton from 1957 to 1959 . He recorded with Med Flory and with Jim Hall and Red Mitchell ( The Modest Jazz Trio , 1960). In Los Angeles he played in a duo with Claude Williamson . He toured with Harry James until the 1970s . After the end of his music career, he ran restaurants and nightclubs from 1974, such as the Tumwater Conservatory Club near Olympia (Washington) .
