Thomas Renner (Abbot)

Thomas Renner OSB (born: René Renner ; born May 13, 1971 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman . He has been abbot of Altenburg Abbey since March 12, 2014 .

Life

René Renner, as he was called by his baptismal name, was born in Vienna, where he grew up in the 20th district of Brigittenau . Here he attended elementary and secondary school and in 1990 passed the Matura at the commercial academy of the Viennese business community in Floridsdorf .

From 1990 to 1993 Renner was a seminarist in the Vienna seminary before coming to Altenburg. A year later, in 1994, he took the temporary and in 1997 the perpetual vows . Also in 1997 he was ordained a deacon . On June 11, 1999 , Cardinal Franz König ordained him a priest in Altenburg. Renner received the order name Thomas . From 1999 to 2001 Renner was chaplain in Altenburg, then until 2004 moderator and finally from 2004 to 2008 pastor in Röhrenbach . From 2008 to 2014 he was pastor in the Lower Austrian community of Horn . Since March 1, 2014 he has been pastor of the Altenburg monastery parish; apart from that, he worked as pastor in Strögen until August 31, 2018.

In addition to his spiritual career, Renner worked from 1996 to 2013 as a religion teacher at the Bundesgymnasium Horn and from 1998 to 2008 as a catechist in the elementary school in Röhrenbach.

From September 2010 Renner was Prior of Altenburg Abbey. On January 17, 2014 he was elected abbot; he took office on March 12, 2014, the 70th birthday of his predecessor Abbot Christian Haidinger . On April 27, 2014 he received the abbot's benediction from the St. Pölten diocesan bishop Klaus Küng .

When he took office, Renner was Austria's youngest abbot.
