Süss began his career at VfR Rheinfelden in southern Baden and then played at FC Nordstern Basel in the National League A and B in Switzerland. In 1983 he moved from Nordstern to FC Basel in the National League A. There was also the new coach Ernst August Künnecke from FC Waterschei from Belgium and the players René Botteron , Uwe Dreher and Martin Andermatt . The result was only ninth place in the 1983/84 round. In his third and fourth years at FC Basel, he got to know the coaching work of the returned Helmut Benthaus and the qualities of the newcomer Gerd Strack from 1. FC Köln and the young player Adrian Knup . In 1987 he signed a contract with Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC . On the first game day, August 1, 1987, Süss made his debut at home against 1. FC Cologne in the Bundesliga. He formed the KSC defensive in the 1-1 draw against the Cologne offensive forces Flemming Povlsen, Thomas Häßler, Thomas Allofs and Tony Woodcock, together with Srećko Bogdan , Oliver Kreuzer , Karl-Heinz Wöhrlin and Wolfgang Trapp . In four seasons at KSC, the defender played 109 first division games (six goals). On June 15, 1991, the last match day of the 1990/91 round, the defensive player completed his last competitive game for Karlsruher SC (2-2 at Hamburger SV ). In 1991 he moved to the upper division SV Wehen . In 1994/95 he played with contractions in the newly founded Regionalliga Süd and then again in the Oberliga Hessen , which was now fourth class. In 1996 he left the club.
