Uwe Dreher (born May 13, 1960 in Tübingen ; † October 20, 2016 there ) was a German football player and coach . In his prime, Dreher played as a center forward , later in attacking midfield and at the end of his career as a sweeper .
Player career
Uwe Dreher, who grew up in Wurmlingen near Tübingen, started playing soccer at SV 03 Tübingen and was active with the Stuttgarter Kickers from 1978 to 1983 . The striker played a total of 137 second division games for the club, 69 of them in the 2nd Bundesliga South and 68 in the single-track 2nd Bundesliga introduced for the 1981/82 season . He scored a total of 66 goals. Dreher scored three goals in one game in the 5: 3 victory of the Kickers in the Carl Benz Stadium near Waldhof Mannheim (September 3, 1978) and in the 8: 1 home win over FC Homburg (December 23, 1979). In addition, the center forward reached the second round of the DFB Cup twice with the Stuttgart team , but remained there without scoring.
During this time, the striker was nominated by coach Berti Vogts in October 1980 for a friendly game of the German U21 national team together with his teammate at the time, Guido Buchwald . In the Bökelbergstadion , Dreher stood next to players like Pierre Littbarski and Lothar Matthäus for the full 90 minutes in the 0-0 win against the Netherlands . All coaches and companions were of the opinion that Tübingen had the talent for the first Bundesliga , but Dreher was repeatedly thrown back by injuries. So his planned move to the then Bundesliga club 1. FC Kaiserslautern also failed, which ultimately led to the separation with the Kickers.
After his Kickers time he played in Switzerland for FC Basel , FC Laufen and FC Schaffhausen . After a year in Basel, he was loaned to FC Laufen, which had been promoted to the second highest league under Urs Siegenthaler . With Dreher as the "focal point", Laufen saved itself with a 1-1 draw against Schaffhausen on the last day of the league.
Dreher then had his best time in Switzerland in Schaffhausen. In 1988 the club was in the second division in the Swiss Cup final, but lost 2-0 to Grasshopper Club Zurich in front of 33,000 spectators in Bern . In the same season, Schaffhausen lacked in the promotion round of the National League B only three points for promotion to the top division. At that time, Dreher played with the future Swiss national coach Rolf Fringer and was also considered the mentor of his young team-mate Roberto di Matteo , who won the Champions League in 2012 as coach with FC Chelsea in Munich against FC Bayern . At FC Schaffhausen Dreher was also a teammate of Joachim Löw , the German world champion coach in 2014, in the 1989/90 season . In his obituary, FC Schaffhausen Uwe Dreher certified that he was “the team's life insurance”.
