Thomas Seidl ( artist name Tomtschek ) (born November 1, 1968 in Vienna ; † November 15, 2011 in Rhodes ) was an Austrian artist , actor , director and theater maker.

Life

The son of the artist couple Charlotte and Johannes Seidl , Thomas Seidl grew up in Maria Schutz am Semmering. After graduating from high school , he studied art history at the University of Vienna, but did not graduate, instead devoting himself to his own artistic projects early on, which were in the tradition of Viennese actionism , happening and performance art. With his collective HAPPY he realized numerous projects under the artist name Tomtschek, but was also active as a developer of television formats and moderator, including for the radio station FM4 . Thomas Seidl died in an accident in November 2011 at the age of 43.

Tomtschek's main work is concentrated in the total work of art HAPPY , originally a weekly club founded in 1993 with house music and so-called "Happynings". The protagonists of the performance collective sometimes changed and presented various art projects over the years with different casts, always under the direction and direction of Tomtschek.

Between 1993 and 2011, in addition to almost 400 Happynings and performances in the context of the club, the 14-part interactive telenovela Felicidat - Dornenwege zum Glück (shown in 1996 as a contribution to the “Young Scene” exhibition at the Vienna Secession and awarded the Vienna Art Prize Städtischen), two full-length feature films ( Felicidat , Ekstase - Rise and Fall of the Russian Elvis ), the weekly television program HAPPY TV , which was broadcast between 1998 and 2000 on the Vienna public access channel TIV , and two musicals Steffi - the worst musical der Welt about the life of Steffi Graf (first performance 1999 in Vienna) and Lagerhouse - two lives between cola and crack about Amy Winehouse and Karl Lagerfeld (first performance 2008 at the Donaufestival in Krems, in a new version in autumn 2008 in Vienna). In 2011 Tomtschek and his 10-person ensemble started the long-term project SOAP - Tür auf Tür zu , a TV series staged live in front of an audience and cameras in a boulevard stage setting with several narrative levels at the Vienna WUK Theater . The performance soap opera ended with episode 1004.
