Thomas Steffen

Thomas Steffen (born December 25, 1961 in Simmern ) is a German lawyer and political official. He has been State Secretary since 2012 , in the Federal Ministry of Finance until 2018 and in the Federal Ministry of Health since 2019 .

Steffen studied law and political science at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the University of Burgundy in Dijon . From 1989 to 1990 he did his doctorate with a comparative law thesis at the University of Mainz with study visits to the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Steffen began his professional career in the industrial policy department of the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi). In the following years he worked as a consultant in the management team of the Treuhandanstalt (1992) and in the European department of the BMWi (1993–1994). After he headed the Department for State Assets in the Ministry of Finance of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1994 and 1995 , he returned as personal advisor to the then parliamentary state secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance, Irmgard Karwatzki (1997-1998), and as advisor to the German Bundestag (1999–2000) returned to the federal administration; afterwards he was appointed head of department in the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF). From 2002 to 2010 he was a member of the board of directors of the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). There he was entrusted with international tasks in addition to insurance and pension fund supervision.

In October 2010 he moved again to the Federal Ministry of Finance, where he took over the management of the European Policy Department and was primarily responsible for managing the sovereign debt crisis. From the beginning of 2012 until April 2018 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Here he was responsible for departments I (financial policy and economic policy issues), VII (financial market policy) and E ( European policy ). Since 2018 he has been teaching on the law of the European Economic and Monetary Union at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

On May 15, 2019, Steffen was appointed State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG).

Since 1983 he has been a member of the Catholic student association VKDSt Hasso-Rhenania Mainz in the Cartell Association .
