Thomas Tharayil (clergyman, 1899)

Thomas Tharayil (born May 5, 1899 in Kaipuzha , Kottayam District , Kerala , India , † July 26, 1975 ) was an Indian clergyman and Syro-Malabar bishop of Kottayam .

Life

Thomas Tharayil was ordained a priest for the Kottayam eparchy on December 18, 1926 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on June 9, 1945 Coadjutor Bishop of Kottayam and Titular Bishop of Azotus . The Bishop of Kottayam, Alexander Chulaparambil , donated him episcopal ordination on October 7th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Vijayapuram , Juan Vicente Araña y Idígoras , and the Bishop of Trichur , George Alapatt .

With the death of Alexander Chulaparambil on January 8, 1951, he succeeded him as Bishop of Kottayam. He participated in the first two sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

On May 5, 1974, Pope Paul VI. his age-related retirement.
