Thomas Walter (computer scientist)

Thomas Walter (* 1966 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German computer scientist. He is professor for information services at the University of Tübingen and head of the data processing center there.

Life

After Thomas Walter had passed his Abitur at the High School in Hanau , he studied physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1986 to 1991 . During this time he was at the German Electron Synchrotron in Hamburg in 1989 and was also accepted into the funding program of the German National Academic Foundation in 1989 .

After completing his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the TU Darmstadt until 1995, receiving the Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Foundation's sponsorship award in 1991 and receiving his doctorate in the field of mathematics in 1994 . From 1995 to 1997 he was a research assistant in the Quantitative Analysis , Statistics and Data Processing department of the Science Council . From 1998 to August 2000 Thomas Walter headed the data processing and organization (DVO) department at the University of Tübingen .

In September 2000 he was offered the chair for programming and operation of websites at the University of Applied Sciences in Kaiserslautern . In the 2006 summer semester he became dean of the Department of Computer Science and Microsystems Technology (IMST). In October 2008 he was initially appointed to the W3 professorship for Information Services at the University of Tübingen. In December he then took over the professorship for information services.

Since the beginning of 2014 he has been CEO of HIS eG , a cooperative of universities in Germany for the needs-based and efficient supply of university management software.

Research priorities

  • HISQIS module COB, development of a web interface for KLR module HISCOB-GX, in cooperation with HIS GmbH
  • JENIFFER (Java Extended Nef Image File Format EditoR), a tool with which one can understand different interpolation methods and adaptive methods
