Thomas Engelhard von Nathusius (born September 24, 1866 in Althaldensleben , † August 18, 1904 in Stettin or August 20 in Berlin) was a German landscape and animal painter .

Youth and education

Nathusius was the youngest son of the district administrator and manorial estate owner Heinrich von Nathusius and his wife Louise, nee. Behmer. His grandfather was the wealthy businessman and factory owner Johann Gottlob Nathusius , and a first cousin was the portrait painter Susanne von Nathusius .

He spent his youth on his father's manor Althaldensleben , where he was initially taught by private tutors. He made his Abitur at the boarding school in Roßleben . This was followed by a one-year military service .

From 1886 Nathusius studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Academy of Fine Arts . With a break in 1888 and 1889, he was there until 1892.

As a painter, he focused on realistic depictions of animals, especially horses. He worked several times with his brother Simon von Nathusius , an animal breeding professor at the University of Halle (Saale) , on the illustration of his works.

On July 9, 1895, Nathusius married a second-degree niece, the writer Annemarie von Nathusius, with whom he lived in Berlin. The marriage remained childless and was divorced shortly before his death.

Nathusius died in 1904 in the Bethanien Deaconess Hospital in Stettin from a serious illness from which he had suffered since 1900. His grave is in the Nathusius family cemetery in Althaldensleben.
