Thomas West (* 13. September 1682 in Trondheim ; † 9. April 1727 ibid) was head of the seed - or Lapland - mission .

Life

Thomas von Westen was originally a lecturer. In 1716 he was appointed head of the Sami or Lapland Mission by Frederick IV of Denmark. At the Trondheim Cathedral School he trained teachers and catechists as missionaries for the Sami. From the west made three extensive trips to Lapland, studying the country and its people. Thanks to his careful and dignified treatment of the Sami, he had great success in his preaching. During the last years of his life he lived in Trondheim and was able to pursue the tasks there.
