Thorn.Eleven was a German rock band from Heidelberg , which was founded in 1996 under the name Thorn. The band changed their name to avoid possible legal problems with a band of the same name from Great Britain, as they had the name Thorn protected. The addition Eleven was chosen because the first self-produced CD Inside contained eleven songs on the one hand and was released in November, the eleventh month on the other. Thorn.Eleven follow a style that sounds like the intersection of guitar-heavy grunge , metal and simple rock . In the band's early days, Thorn.Eleven referred to the style itself as brute rock. On September 15, 2009 Thorn.Eleven announced the separation on their homepage.

Band history

The beginnings

Immediately after the band was founded, David Becker (vocals, guitar), Matthias Heinz (guitar), Kai Mücke (bass) and Mathias Wienand (drums) set about writing their own songs. At first the work was based on bands like Crowbar , Tool and Clutch , but the quartet found its own niche. In 1996 the band released their first demo tape. In 1998 the self-produced CD Inside was released . This was followed by appearances all over Germany. The band achieved greater awareness within the scene with the song "Sick", which was published on a CD sampler by the Visions music magazine.

First record deal

After appearing at the 1999 Bizarre Festival in Cologne , Thorn.Eleven drew the attention of various record labels. This was followed by a record deal with Steamhammer / SPV. There the self-titled debut album was released in 2001. The first long player was recorded under the direction of Andy Sneap in Nottingham . Among other things, the quartet acted as the opener for Biohazard , Slayer , Oomph! , Thumb and Earthtone9 .

Line-up change and second album

In the meantime, Thorn.Eleven and drummer Mathias Wienand went their separate ways. Björn Lücker took the place behind the drum set , who also recorded the second album A Different View . The CD, which was released in 2004, was recorded with producer Roberto Laghi in Gothenburg, Sweden . However, after a few differences, the band and Lücker parted ways. Mathias Wienand returned behind the drums. This was followed by a joint tour with the nu-metal band 4Lyn .

Long periods of silence and separation

However, Mathias Wienand did not take the place behind the boilers for too long, because in 2006 they separated again. There were no live activities for a long time, but the remaining three musicians buried themselves in the rehearsal room and worked on new songs, which were finally recorded in a studio in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Behind the drums sat Kai Bergerin, among other things the drummer of the Darmstadt death metal combo Disbelief , who was hired for the recordings. The collaboration resulted in a permanent solution: Kai Bergerin became a new permanent member of the band. Thorn.Eleven and the record company Steamhammer / SPV went separate ways.

Circles and new label

The new songs that Thorn.Eleven had already recorded were initially offered under their own direction for free download on the Internet in 2008. But only a short time later, the band signed a new deal with the small Frankfurt indie label Muscon Records (distributed by Intergroove), which released the third long player Circles in 2009.

separation

On September 15, 2009 Thorn.Eleven announced the separation on their homepage. The main reason given is the change in musical tastes of individual band members over time. However, the members want to continue to make music together, but under a different name.
