The Thunberg Astilbe or purple leaf Astilbe ( Astilbe thunbergii ) is a plant of the genus Astilbe ( Astilbe ) in the family Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The Thunberg splendor spar is a perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 to 80 centimeters. The plant forms a rhizome . The leaflets are ovate-circular or narrowly ovate, rarely lanceolate and measure 4 to 12 × 2 to 5 centimeters, the terminal leaflet is rounded to heart-shaped at the base. The petals are white, linear and 3 to 4 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

Occurrence

The Thunberg splendor spar occurs in Japan on Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu on sunny grasslands.

Systematics

There are seven varieties (selection):

  • Astilbe thunbergii var. Formosa (Nakai) Ohwi : The petals are 4 to 7 millimeters long.
  • Astilbe thunbergii var. Fujisanensis (Nakai) Ohwi : The petals are 2 to 2.5 millimeters long and almost as long as the stamens.
  • Astilbe thunbergii var. Thunbergii .

use

The Thunberg splendor spar is used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees and perennial beds and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1878 at the latest. There are several types (selection):

  • 'Betsy Cyperus': The flowers are light pink.
  • 'Moerheimii': The plant reaches heights of 90 to 100 centimeters, the flowers are white.
  • 'Red Charm': The plant reaches heights of 90 centimeters, the flowers are red.
  • 'Ostrich feather': The plant reaches heights of 80 to 100 centimeters, the flowers are salmon pink.
