Thunderstone is a Finnish power metal band founded by Nino Laurenne in 2000 .

history

The band Thunderstone was founded in the beginning of 2000 by the Finnish guitarist Nino Laurenne. After recording the first demo , three more musicians joined the band: Titus Hjelm (bass), Pasi Rantanen (vocals) and Mirka Rantanen (drums). In mid-2001 the quartet was reinforced by Kari Tornack (keyboard) and a second demo was recorded, which brought Thunderstone a record deal with Nuclear Blast .

The debut album Thunderstone was released in 2002. Guitarist Timo Tolkki ( Stratovarius ) took part as a guest musician . The album made it into various hit lists for "Best Metal Album 2002". At the beginning of 2003 the band was voted Newcomer of the Year by fans of Rock Hard magazine and a major European tour followed with Symphony X and Stratovarius.

After the tour, the band went back to the studio and recorded their second album, The Burning , which this time featured guitarist Michael Romeo (Symphony X). A second European tour (with Axel Rudi Pell ) followed, during which Thunderstone also celebrated their first festival appearance at the Wacken Open Air .

The third album Tools of Destruction was released in 2005 and its single Tool of the Devil made it to number 3 in the Finnish charts. This time the band toured Europe together with Lordi , Hammerfall and Firewind .

In 2006 the fourth album Evolution 4.0 was released , with which the band made the first jump into the Top 10 of the Finnish charts. In the following year, the first appearance was completed in the USA. In Finland they took part in the Finnish qualification for the Eurovision Song Contest and took 2nd place behind the rock singer Hanna Pakarinen .

At the end of August 2007, the band separated from singer Pasi Rantanen and keyboardist Kari Tornack. Keyboardist Jukka Karinen (Status Minor) and singer Tommi Salmela ( Tarot ) were introduced as a short-term replacement for their first headliner tour (with Nocturnal Rites ) .

At the beginning of February 2008 the band announced that Jukka Karinen would be an integral part of the line-up from now on and Rick Altzi ( At Vance ) was introduced as the new singer. In July 2013 it was announced on the Facebook page that singer Rick Altzi had left the band in friendship due to his activities at Masterplan , and drummer Mirka Rantanen also left the group for personal reasons. On August 2nd, it was announced on the Facebook page that founding singer Pasi Rantanen was part of the band again.

In 2015 the band announced that they were working on a new album. In the same year Thunderstone released a music video for the song Fire and Ice . Another music video followed in 2016 for the single The Path . The new album was released on April 1st, 2016 and is called Apocalypse Again .
