Nocturnal Rites is a Swedish power metal band that was formed in 1990.

history

The band was first formed under the name Necronomic and played mostly death metal (as can be heard on their demo The Obscure , 1991 and contains four pieces of music). Several independent labels showed interest, but the band hadn't signed a contract in the hope of better deals. As early as 1992 their music had developed into a more harmonious and melodic metal. The music was heavily influenced by Iron Maiden and Judas Priest , but still clearly Death Metal.

At the beginning the band consisted only of Fredrik Mannberg (guitar, vocals) and Tommy Eriksson (drums), later the bassist Nils Eriksson joined them. After their orientation towards the more melodic Power Metal , the band looked for a singer who better suited this style and should replace Frederik Mannberg. In 1993, a replacement for Mannberg's vocal part was found in Anders Zackrisson, who continued to play with the band. A little later Tommy Eriksson was replaced by Ulf Andersson and a second guitarist was added with Mikael Söderström. By this time Necronomic had already developed into a band that played Power Metal in the style of Helloween .

In 1994 the band signed with the Swedish label Dark Age and their first album In a Time of Blood and Fire was released in 1995 in cooperation with Megarock Records. Then the guitarist Mikael Söderström left the band and was replaced by Nils Norberg. In 1997 the second album, Tales of Mystery and Imagination , was released first in Japan, then in 1998 in Europe by Century Media . The band gave various concerts in Europe with Overkill and Angel Dust .

In 1999 the third album, The Sacred Talisman, was released . This was recorded with the drummer Owe Lingvall because Ulf Andersson suffered a leg injury. The album rose to number 83 in the Japanese charts. Just 2 weeks after its release, the band toured Europe with Nevermore , Morgana Lefay and Sacred Steel and took part in open airs such as the 1999 Dynamo Open Air . After the tour, Anders Zackrisson left the band and was replaced by a friend of Owe Lingvall, Jonny Lindqvist. He gave the band a new voice on their next album, Afterlife , which was released in 2000. The band went on a European tour with this album together with Iron Savior .

In 2004 the album New World Messiah was released, followed by a six-week tour with Edguy and Brainstorm . Two videos were also released in December, Awakening and Against the World , both of which were produced by drummer Owe Lingvall.

2005 marked the 10th anniversary with a double CD called Lost in Time , which contained the band's first two releases as well as some additional material. In the album Grand Illusion , which was also released in 2005, many guests appeared; such as Jens Johansson ( Stratovarius ), Henrik Danhage ( Evergrey ), Kristoffer W. Olivius ( Naglfar ), Stefan Elmgren ( Hammerfall ) and also the Swedish world champion in cross-country skiing Per Elofsson , who like the band also comes from Umeå .

In 2008 Nils Norberg left the band, as he announced on the band's homepage.

The band has toured with Nightwish , Gamma Ray , Hammerfall and Labyrinth and played at festivals like Wacken Open Air , Sweden Rock Festival , Gates of Metal etc.
