Thut is a Swiss family name, which is first mentioned in the 15th century. Name bearers are mainly represented in Switzerland today . Due to various emigrants, the family name can also be found in the USA , Germany , Romania and parts of South America .

Historical mentions

Due to the early mention in the year books of the Seengen Church in the canton of Aargau and the good relationship with the Lords of Hallwyl , the Thut must have been a respected family in this village.

In addition to the tavern owner Heini Thut mentioned in the year book, one also reads that some of the Thut family held the office of subordinate. In 1477 a Hans Thut and the Confederates went to the battle of Nancy .

Another interesting personality was Melchior Thut , who came from Glarnerland . The 2.32 meter tall giant, born in 1736, became known in Europe as a showman dressed in Swiss mercenary uniform. Later he worked as a favorite servant at the court of Duke Karl Eugen von Württemberg .

One of the most famous people with the name Thut was the former mayor Niklaus Thut of the then Habsburg town of Zofingen in the canton of Aargau. In 1386 he went to the battle of Sempach with the Habsburgs against the Confederates as the standard bearer of the town of Zofingen . Allegedly, shortly before his death, he swallowed the Zofingen banner in order to preserve the flag and thus also the access to the city of Zofingen by the Confederates. This story only developed into the actual city myth of the city of Zofingen after the first tradition in the 16th century, which continues to this day.

With the era of emigrants to America, some families named Thut also moved to the USA. Samuel Thut, who was born in Oberentfelden (Canton Aargau) in 1837 , founded a brush factory which was later taken over by his brother-in-law Walther and which shaped the history of Oberentfelden under the name "Walther AG Brush Factory". Samuel Thut emigrated with his family to Medford ( Wisconsin off) because there he hoped for a better life. Today Samuel Thut's descendants still live in Wisconsin.

Rudolf Thut, born in 1733, who was persecuted and harassed as an Anabaptist , emigrated with his family to the state of Ohio . One of the descendants founded a Mennonite congregation that still exists today as a bishop .
