Started his career in Brazil and moved to Austria

For the 2015/16 season he moved to Austria for the second division club Kapfenberger SV . In July 2015 he made his debut for the Styrians in the second division when he was in the starting line-up against SC Austria Lustenau on the second day of that season and was replaced by Florian Flecker in the 81st minute . In September 2015 he scored his first two goals for Kapfenberg in a 2-1 win against Lustenau. In his first season in Austria he came to 29 second division appearances, in which he scored nine goals. In the 2016/17 season he played 35 of the 36 season games and scored 14 goals, making him the Styrian top scorer. Only on the 26th match day was he suspended against FC Blau-Weiß Linz .

Despite doping ban in the Bundesliga

On July 18, 2017, João Victor was suspended for two years for doping. During a control on May 5, 2017, the prohibited substance isomethepten was detected. The suspension started on May 27, 2017, the last competitive game the Brazilian played. The suspension was later reduced to six months, ending November 26, 2017. João Victor could have appealed within four weeks.

Despite the suspension, he moved to Bundesliga club LASK in July 2017 . Although João Victor still had an ongoing contract with Kapfenberg, he was signed by the Linzers on a free transfer because Kapfenberg's drawn option to extend was considered illegal. In October 2017, the Upper Austrians were found to be right and an application from Kapfenberg to refuse a game permit was rejected by the Bundesliga . In the same month, due to his suspension, he only started training at his new club. After the suspension had expired, he made his debut in the top Austrian division in November 2017 when he came on as a substitute for Bruno on matchday 17 of the 2017/18 season against Wolfsberger AC in the 63rd minute . In that game he also scored the 2-0 goal in stoppage time. In December 2017, he was in the LASK starting line-up for the first time on matchday 21 against FC Admira Wacker Mödling . In a 3-1 win against SV Mattersburg in March 2018, he scored his first brace in the Bundesliga. By the end of the season he had played 20 games in the Bundesliga and scored seven goals.

In July 2018, he played his first international match in the second round first leg of qualifying for the Europa League against Lillestrøm SK . LASK defeated the Norwegians after two wins with a total score of 6: 1 and advanced to the third round, where they met Beşiktaş Istanbul . After a 1-0 defeat in the first leg they were eliminated from the competition with a goal in the 90th minute due to the away goal rule after a 2-1 home win. In that game, João Victor scored the goal in the 42nd minute to make it 1-0.

Change to the German Bundesliga

For the 2019/20 season, João Victor moved to the German Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg , where he received a contract that ran until June 2023. He followed his trainer Oliver Glasner , who also went from LASK to Wolfsburg. In Wolfsburg, he scored his first goal in the German Bundesliga in a 2-0 away win against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 12.
