Thuwal ( Arabic ثول, DMG Ṯuwal ) is a village in the province of Mecca in Saudi Arabia .

Thuwal is located on the Red Sea , about 50 km north of Jeddah . The former fishing port was expanded by the Navy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology , founded in 2009 , is based in Thuwal. Its 26 km² campus also includes a mangrove reserve located on the Red Sea coast .

North of Thuwal is the developing King Abdullah Economic City . It is one of three centers in the country whose task, among other things, is to divert the population pressure from the large cities of Saudi Arabia. So far there are no plans to set up a stop in Thuwal for the high-speed railroad from Mecca via Jeddah to Medina .
