Mahmoud Bodo Rasch (born May 12, 1943 in Stuttgart ) is a German architect who specializes in the construction of large mobile umbrellas and lightweight architecture . He is founder and owner of the company SL Rasch GmbH Special and Lightweight Structures with branches in Leinfelden-Echterdingen , Dschedda , Mecca and Medina .

Life

"Mountain Tents", prototypes in Muna, SA, 1981

Rasch's mother, Lilo Rasch-Naegele (1914–1978), was a painter and graphic artist, and his father Bodo Rasch (1903–1995), together with his brother Heinz Rasch (1902–1996), belonged to the international architectural avant-garde of the 1920s. Following the artistic family tradition, the son began studying architecture at the University of Stuttgart in 1964 , which he graduated with a diploma in 1972. His sister Aiga Rasch (1941–2009), who was two years older than him, was an illustrator and graphic artist.

During his studies he became an employee of Frei Otto in 1967 in the Institute for Light Structures at the University of Stuttgart and in 1969 in the design and development office Atelier Frei Otto Warmbronn . Rasch led the work on the new building of the institute (originally the cable net construction was a prototype for the German Pavilion at the Expo 67 in Montreal ) and took over the project management for the first large mobile umbrellas, which Frei Otto designed and built for the Federal Garden Show in Cologne in 1971. This collaboration resulted in joint projects and a close friendship between the two architects. Frei Otto was a consultant in Rasch's team until his death.

In 1973 Rasch was visiting professor at the School of Architecture, University of Texas at Austin , USA. In 1974 she took part in an urban planning competition for pilgrims' accommodation in the tent city in the Mina valley near Mecca. In the same year, Bodo Rasch converted to Islam and adopted the additional first name "Mahmoud".

In 1975 Mahmoud Bodo Rasch founded the Hajj Research Center with Sami Angawi at the King Abdul Aziz University in Jedda, Saudi Arabia . His dissertation on the tent cities of the Hajj was published in 1980 in the series "Communications from the Institute for Lightweight Structures at the University of Stuttgart, IL 29 Tent Cities of the Hajj".

In 1980, Rasch founded the architectural office Rasch & Associates and in 1991 the company Sonderkonstruktionen und Leichtbau (SL GmbH), which has been operating as SL Rasch GmbH Special and Lightweight Structures since 1998. In 1998, Rasch's longstanding chief architect, Jürgen Bradatsch, became a partner in the Rasch und Bradatsch architectural office.

Rasch Frei and his team are continuing Otto's principles of lightweight construction on the basis of basic scientific research. His newly established team for Islamic design brings the minimal forms of lightweight construction into harmony with the forms of jewelry necessary in the context of sacred or sovereign buildings.

Rasch's longstanding commitment in the Middle East and the implementation of extremely adaptable lightweight structures led to spectacular large-scale projects for the holy places of Islam: In cooperation with highly specialized companies, he and his team developed such unusual projects as the world's largest clock tower and the spire of the Makkah Clock Tower , or 250 large mobile umbrellas that shade the piazza around the Prophet's mosque in Medina and protect the pilgrims from sun and rain.
