life and work

Thyra Schmidt studied from 1996 to 2000 at the Hanover University of Applied Sciences, Fine Art, with Peter Tuma and 1999/2000 at the Hiroshima City University, Faculty of Art, Japan. From 2000 to 2001 she studied with Dörte Eißfeldt at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig and from 2001 to 2005 with Thomas Ruff at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf . She lives and works in Düsseldorf.

In her work, Thyra Schmidt combines photographic and filmic means with mostly self-written texts and uses them to create indoor and outdoor installations. "They are interpersonal events, often based on personal experiences, which she reflects in a poetically constructed manner."

At the invitation of the Goethe-Institut Norway , Thyra Schmidt realized the art project I can't just be nowhere in the urban area of Oslo, Norway, in 2009 . “The title I can't just be nowhere underlines the direct character of the Oslo installation in public space and also refers to essential aspects in Thyra Schmidt's work: the presence of the human figure, the focus on the moment and the direct reference to the location, because the The images and thoughts that Thyra Schmidt prints on the posters are always related to the architecture on which they are presented. They show large-format photo and text works with themes that appear private and are mounted on the outside surfaces of residential buildings, public buildings and shops. The coherent installation, which stretched over eleven stations in three central districts of Oslo, addressed the ambivalence between intimacy and the public in urban space. "
