Tiberius Cornelis Winkler

Tiberius Cornelis Winkler (born May 28, 1822 in Leeuwarden , † July 18, 1897 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch surgeon, zoologist and paleontologist. From 1864 he was curator for geology, palaeontology and mineralogy at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.

Life

Winkler married in 1844, was mostly self-taught and began training as a surgeon in Haarlem in 1850. After graduating in 1852, he practiced in Nieuwediep . A fisherman injured by a weever piqued his curiosity and led him to the library of Teyler's Museum. He became an expert on fish and worked part-time for the museum, whose fossil fish he cataloged (including from the Jurassic limestone of Solnhofen ). In 1864 he became a curator at the museum. His museum's fossil catalog comprised six volumes and five supplement volumes with 15,458 fossils until 1896. He also cataloged the mineral collection.

Winkler was known in his time for popular scientific articles on biology and natural research, especially in the journal Album der Natuur , and was an advocate of the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin , whose origin of species he translated into Dutch (Het Ontstaan ​​der Soorten).

He was a supporter of the Volapük .
