Tibor Bartha

Tibor Bartha (* 1912 ; † 1995 ) was a Hungarian Protestant theologian , pastor and bishop of the Reformed Church of Hungary and a member of the Presidential Council of the Hungarian People's Republic .

Live and act

Bártha studied Protestant theology after obtaining his university entrance qualification . In continuation of his academic work, he became a doctor of theology doctorate . He was then transferred to the preparatory service of his church and the pastor ordained . In 1958, after the suppression of the Hungarian popular uprising, he was elected bishop of the Reformed Church based in Debrecen .

He was one of the founders of the Christian Peace Conference (CFK) in Prague in 1958 and participated in its meetings and activities throughout its existence, especially the All-Christian Peace Assemblies . In 1968 he was one of those forces in the CFRP who justified the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops and the suppression of the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia as inevitable , which led to the breakup of the CFRP. He maintained numerous ecumenical contacts with representatives of other European churches and a. in correspondence with the President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland Joachim Beckmann . In 1986 he resigned from his church offices for health reasons.

Tibor Bártha was one of the founders of the Martin Niemöller Foundation in 1976 .

Since 1958 Bartha was a member of the Parliament of the People's Republic of Hungary and since 1964 also a member of the Presidential Council of the Hungarian People's Republic. He held both offices until 1987. He was awarded the Order of the Flag of the People's Republic of Hungary .
