Tibor Eckhardt (born October 26, 1888 in Makó , Austria-Hungary , † September 10, 1972 in New York City , USA) was a Hungarian politician.

Life

In 1908 Eckhardt earned a doctorate in law from the University of Budapest and then worked as a county official.

During the Soviet Republic he directed the press affairs of the opposing governments of Arad and Szeged . In 1922 he became a member of parliament for the small farmers' party . From 1932 to 1940 he was chairman of the small farmers' party.

Eckhardt was the leader of the racist Magyar Nemzeti Függetlenségi Párt . From 1934 to 1935 he was Hungary's representative at the League of Nations .

In 1940 Eckhardt protested against Hungary's accession to the Tripartite Pact and resigned as chairman of the small farmers' party. In 1941 he emigrated to the USA, where he was part of a Hungarian government in exile. After 1945 he was a leading opposition figure in the Hungarian community in exile and never returned to Hungary.
