Tichaona Jokonya

Tichaona Joseph Benjamin Jokonya (born December 27, 1938 in Chikomba , † June 24, 2006 in Harare ) was a Zimbabwean diplomat and politician .

The doctor of political science taught from 1971 to 1977 at the University of Birmingham . He was then a lecturer on modern British and European history at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare.

Dr. Jokonya then held responsible positions since Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980. Initially, he was Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Recreation. From 1983 to 1988 he was ambassador to Ethiopia . After returning to Zimbabwe, he became Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Political Affairs and, two years later, Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Later, Dr. Jokonya from 1992 to 2002 Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York . From 2003 to April 2005 he was Director General of the Tourism Authority.

Tichaona Jokonya was most recently Minister of Information and Public Relations in the government of President Robert Mugabe from April 2005 until his death . As such, he tried to reduce the tension with the press that had arisen under his predecessor Jonathan Moyo .
