The area is located in a moraine landscape and is characterized by several small streams, a waterfall and valleys such as the Wickeltal. On the edge of the forest area, on the site of the former orangery of the Neuwerk baroque garden, there is a mighty three-winged building erected in 1851 as a Danish garrison hospital, with the old Paulihof to the northwest. The forest area is crossed from the southwest by the Kolonnenweg, which was laid out by Danish engineers in the period before the German-Danish War for a possible quick retreat from the Danewerk .

The grave of the Danish King Abel is also located in the zoo . Abel, who had previously killed his brother Erik on the Schlei in 1250 , was murdered by North Frisians in Eiderstedt in 1252 and finally buried in a swamp hole north of Gottorf Castle. According to legend, he cannot rest due to his crimes and takes part in the wild hunt on stormy nights .

Here, as in the adjacent Pöhler enclosure, battles took place between Danish and German-Schleswig-Holstein troops during the 1st Schleswig War in April 1848 .
