The zoo Neustrelitz is the zoo of about 48 hectares in the city of Neustrelitz . It is home to around 450 animals from around 40 mainly native species.

history

Even before the city of Neustrelitz was founded, a zoo was laid out in 1721 near Lake Zierker as a ducal hunting reserve. The approximately 50 hectare area, fenced in by the duke as a game gate, was used to keep 30 to 60 fallow deer . As part of the design of the landscape park around the grand ducal palace, the beginnings of today's zoo were laid in the 18th century. This makes it one of the oldest zoos in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The Hirschtor, which is still preserved today, used to serve as access from the Residenzviertel to the largely natural area of the zoo . It was built from 1824 to 1826 according to plans by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel . The two bronze deer on the granite pillars are from Christian Daniel Rauch . Today the entrance to the zoo is near the Husarenmarkt shopping center .

At the end of the Second World War there was a sharp decline in the number of animals; a hurricane did the rest in 1956. Since 1956 the area was operated by the city as a zoo.

Between 1961 and 1966, voluntary work groups from citizens and businesses in the city worked thousands of hours free of charge in the expansion of the park.

Between 1974 and 1987 aviaries, cages and, above all, spacious ungulates were built. The employees received a social building in 1980; At that time, the zookeepers looked after 850 animals from 85 species.

In 1993 the workshops of the Rehabilitation Center Neustrelitz took over the sponsorship of the zoo. Of the 50 hectare site, only 18 hectares were cultivated; 35 handicapped people got jobs in green maintenance. A restaurant was built from an old barn, a playground, public toilets, parking lots, the ticket office and modern enclosures for Barbary macaques , lynxes and raccoons were built.

In 2011 Stadtwerke Neustrelitz took over the zoo; an entrance building with bistro and social rooms and barrier-free paths were created; the lighting in the area and new enclosures for wild cats , coatis , pigeons , porcupines and red deer were built.

Environmental commitment

The area of the zoo is part of the FFH (Flora-Fauna-Habitat) area of the city of Neustrelitz. Large display boards are used to draw attention to the most endangered native species. An educational trail on the subject of bats , a colony of tree-nesting jackdaws and descriptions of various animal habitats are part of the tour within an old mixed forest.
