The Tropical Zoo Bansin (formerly Tropenhaus Bansin ) is a small zoo in the municipality of Heringsdorf belonging seaside resort Bansin on the island of Usedom . The animal population includes around 150 predominantly exotic animals from 50 species, including iguanas , snakes , birds and monkeys , most of which are housed in two halls and some outdoor enclosures. The facility participates in the European conservation breeding program for white-faced marmosets ( Callithrix geoffroyi ).
In addition, the tropical zoo, "Germany's smallest real zoo", functions as a sanctuary for tortoises and other exotic animals that were confiscated by the federal customs administration on the border with Poland at the nearby border crossing between Ahlbeck and Swinoujscie . The complex, which is surrounded by apartment houses, also includes a petting zoo with goats and donkeys .
The tropical house was opened in 1970. In 1995, it was reopened under private ownership at a new location.
