State Zoo Association Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Landeszooverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is an interest group to which a large part of the zoo-horticultural institutions of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have come together. The chairman of the association is (as of 2017) the Rostock zoo director Udo Nagel. The establishment of a state zoo association is unique in Germany and in some ways comparable to the working group of the NRW partner zoos, an initiative of the twelve scientifically managed zoos in North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

The association goes back to structures that were created in the GDR , in particular the so-called AG Nord, a working group around the Rostock Zoo consultation point that has existed since 1974. He supported surrounding pet gardens in the implementation of animal husbandry standards and in the event of problems. The contacts were continued after the reunification of Germany, which led to the establishment of the Association of Animal Horticultural Institutions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 1992 , which only existed for a short time. Since 1996, an annual conference of the zoos in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has been held to discuss issues relating to everyday pet business such as subsidies, disease control and occupational safety.

On June 22, 2001, the community of interests of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Zoo was founded , in which the state's zoos were able to participate in the implementation of Directive 1999/22 / EC , the development of a state zoo law for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On November 30, 2001, the association had 19 members, including 15 zoos within the meaning of the EU directive and three pet parks. On November 30, 2007, he changed his name to the State Zoo Association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Together with the Ministry of the Environment, the association has been holding an annual state zoo day in the affiliated zoos since 2011, giving visitors a look behind the scenes. In 2015, the State Zoo Academy was launched on the island of Vilm as an educational institution . To rescue injured wild animals found, the State Zoo Association opened a collection and quarantine station in Stralsund in 2015 and in Greifswald in 2016.
